Bashardost: Taliban Officials Are Increasingly Surrounded by Luxury and Ceremony

DID Press: Ramazan Bashardost, a former member of Afghanistan’s parliament, has accused Taliban officials of becoming increasingly involved in luxury, elaborate protocol and heavy security, despite their claims of governing according to the model of the early Islamic caliphs.

Bashardost, a politician and former Afghan lawmaker, told media that Taliban officials have moved away from their stated commitment to simplicity and instead embraced greater displays of wealth and official ceremony.

He said Taliban leaders now travel with numerous bodyguards and extensive security arrangements, which he described as being in clear contradiction with their claims of practicing “simple and people-centered governance.”

Taliban officials have repeatedly emphasized simplicity and Islamic governance. However, reports have pointed to increased official protocol, the use of luxury vehicles and the deployment of large numbers of personal guards around senior Taliban figures.

Bashardost’s remarks highlight a growing debate over the contrast between the Taliban’s public rhetoric on austerity and the conduct and security arrangements surrounding senior officials.
