DID Press: Foreign Affairs argues in a new analysis that the United States no longer enjoys the level of military superiority it possessed in 1991 and can no longer rely on relatively low-cost military force to compel other countries to change their positions.

The article, titled “Iran and the New Rules of Global Power” and authored by Professor Pip, says the United States has lost much of the overwhelming military advantage it held after the end of the Cold War.
According to the analysis, Washington’s ability to use military power to impose its will on other states has weakened significantly compared with the period following the 1991 Gulf War.
The assessment comes as part of a broader examination of Iran’s role and the changing balance of power in the international system, highlighting what the author describes as a shift in the rules governing global power.
