Neumann: US Embassy in Kabul Could Reopen if Taliban Change Policies

DID Press: Ronald Neumann, a former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, says Washington could consider reopening its embassy in Kabul if doing so serves U.S. interests and the Taliban make concrete changes to their policies.

In an interview with i24NEWS, Neumann said the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls remains one of the main obstacles to improved relations, arguing that any concessions by Washington should be matched by “real action” from the Taliban.

He said the United States is already engaging with the Taliban in practical areas, including efforts to secure the release of U.S. citizens and counter terrorism. However, he warned that completely cutting off communication with Afghanistan could also create risks for Washington.

Neumann stressed that reopening the embassy without obtaining specific concessions from the Taliban would send a message that the group has no incentive to change its policies.
