Taliban Police Law Represents Widespread Human Rights Violations, says Amnesty

DID Press: Amnesty International strongly criticized the Taliban’s new police law, describing it as a direct assault on fundamental freedoms and human rights in Afghanistan, warning of serious implications for fair trials, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

In a new statement, Amnesty International’s Asia division said the law imposes an absolute ban on gatherings and demonstrations as a binding principle, constituting a clear violation of the right to peaceful assembly and further tightening the climate of repression in Afghanistan.

The organization also accused the Taliban of arbitrary detention, torture and enforced disappearances of protesters, and called for the immediate repeal of all decrees and policies that conflict with Afghanistan’s international obligations.

Human rights activists have warned that the law expands the powers of Taliban security forces without independent judicial oversight, while further restricting civil protests, media activities and public demands.

Experts say the development could further widen the gap between Kabul and the international community over human rights standards.
