US Congress Extends Afghanistan War Commission’s Mandate

DID Press: The United States Congress has extended the mandate of the independent, bipartisan Afghanistan War Commission for another year.

The commission said leaders of relevant committees in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, representing the country’s two major political parties, had agreed to extend its work.

Under the decision, the commission’s final report, previously scheduled for release in 2026, has been postponed until August 2027.

The Afghanistan War Commission said the additional time would allow it to conduct further research, deepen its investigations and present its final findings and recommendations based on more comprehensive evidence.

The commission was established by Congress in December 2021 and is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the United States’ two-decade war in Afghanistan. Its mandate includes examining key decisions made before the U.S. military intervention in 2001 and the factors that shaped Washington’s policies and military operations throughout the conflict.
