DID Press: U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has signaled that Washington could impose additional tariffs on Canadian imports as trade tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate.
Greer said President Donald Trump has multiple options available to increase economic pressure on Canada and that Washington is prepared to take further trade measures if disputes with Ottawa persist.
The warning comes after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods following the collapse of trade negotiations. Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs targeting U.S. products, further deepening the dispute between the two countries.
Greer has defended Washington’s tariff policy, arguing that the administration remains open to discussions with Ottawa while seeking to address what it describes as barriers affecting U.S. exports, including disputes involving dairy, automobiles and other sectors.
Despite the escalating trade confrontation, the energy relationship between the two countries remains a major strategic concern because of their deep economic interdependence. Canada is a crucial supplier of crude oil and other essential resources to the United States, making further disruption to bilateral trade potentially significant for both economies.
