Guterres Urges Maximum Restraint and Respect for Ceasefires

DID Press: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on all parties involved in conflicts across the Middle East to exercise “maximum restraint” and respect ceasefire agreements and international law.

Guterres expressed concern over the continuing violence and instability in the region, warning that the conflicts were producing far-reaching humanitarian and political consequences.

He stressed that agreements reached between conflicting parties must be respected and that international law should be upheld.

The UN chief also called for negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant United Nations resolutions.

His remarks come amid continuing tensions and repeated allegations of ceasefire violations in several parts of the Middle East, including the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.

Claims that specific parties—including Israel and the United States—have repeatedly violated ceasefire agreements should be attributed to the parties making those allegations and assessed against independently verified evidence and relevant international mechanisms.
