DID Press: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Western countries are already overrepresented on the United Nations Security Council and that any reform of the body should increase the representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Lavrov made the remarks at a news conference following his address to the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
He said Moscow opposes granting additional permanent seats to Western countries, arguing that “the West is already overrepresented” on the Security Council.
The Russian foreign minister also expressed support for Brazil and India potentially becoming permanent members of the Security Council.
Lavrov added that the interests of African countries should also be taken into account in the reform process, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
