Karzai: Education for Girls and Boys Guarantees Afghanistan’s Dignity and Independence

DID Press: Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has praised the country’s teachers for their efforts and commitment under difficult circumstances and despite limited resources, congratulating them on World Teachers’ Day.

In a message posted on X, Karzai said Afghan teachers had worked with sincerity and a sense of responsibility to educate and nurture the country’s future generation.

He said educating a knowledgeable young generation could help create the conditions for defending the country, protecting national interests, achieving self-reliance and ensuring a dignified life for the Afghan people.

Karzai also stressed the need for both girls and boys to have access to education, describing universal education as one of the foundations of Afghanistan’s independence and the dignity of its people.

His remarks come as restrictions imposed by the Taliban on girls’ education beyond Grade 6 remain in place. UNICEF said in August 2026 that more than 2.6 million Afghan girls had been denied secondary education since 2021, making Afghanistan the only country in the world where secondary and higher education is effectively closed to girls and women.
