After 21 Years, Messi Bids Farewell to Argentina National Team

DID Press: Lionel Messi, the Argentine football icon, ended his 21-year international career on Tuesday after making his final appearance for Argentina in a 3–0 friendly victory over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

The 39-year-old Messi scored from the penalty spot and provided two assists as Argentina defeated Benin. His corner set up Nicolás Otamendi for the opening goal, while his second assist helped Nico Paz score Argentina’s second. Messi then converted a penalty in the 71st minute to complete the 3–0 victory.

More than 85,000 fans filled the Monumental to bid farewell to Argentina’s captain. A giant No. 10 Argentina shirt bearing the word “Gracias” (“Thank you”) was displayed on the pitch before the match, while supporters and teammates gave Messi an emotional final ovation.

Messi’s international career began in 2005 and included major titles with Argentina, including the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With 208 international appearances and 126 goals, Messi leaves the Argentina national team as its most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. He also finished his international career with 70 assists, according to Inter Miami.
