Sohail Afridi, Junaid Akbar Reportedly Detained After Governor’s Rule in KP

DID Press: Sohail Afridi, chief minister of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Junaid Akbar Khan, the provincial president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, have reportedly been arrested following the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in the province.

Akbar confirmed the reported arrests in a post on social media, saying that he and Afridi had been detained. However, Pakistani authorities had not officially confirmed or denied the arrests as of the latest reports.

The reported detentions came after restrictions had reportedly been imposed on meetings with Afridi. The developments unfolded as Pakistan’s federal government moved to take control of the province, citing security concerns and alleged shortcomings in the provincial government’s efforts to combat terrorism.

The emergency measures come amid escalating tensions between the federal government and the PTI, which has been organizing a protest march to Islamabad to demand the release of the party’s jailed founder and former prime minister, Imran Khan.
