UNICEF Warns Afghanistan’s Water Crisis Is Worsening

DID Press: Tajudeen Oyewale, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative in Afghanistan, has warned that the country’s water crisis is deteriorating, with climate change, rising demand, funding shortages and weak infrastructure placing increasing pressure on water resources.

Afghanistan’s water crisis has become one of the country’s major humanitarian and development challenges in recent years. Declining rainfall, recurring droughts and falling groundwater levels have made access to safe drinking water increasingly difficult for families.Insufficient infrastructure for water storage and resource management has further aggravated the situation.

In many areas, families struggle to secure enough water for their daily needs, while children remain among the most vulnerable to water shortages and diseases caused by unsafe water.

UNICEF has repeatedly stressed the need to invest in water supply infrastructure, improve access to safe drinking water and strengthen water resource management in Afghanistan.

Addressing the crisis will require sustainable funding, infrastructure development and the adoption of solutions that can withstand the effects of climate change.
