UN: Violence Against Former Afghan Government Personnel Continues

DID Press: Despite the Taliban’s announcement of a “general amnesty,” killings, arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances involving former Afghan government military personnel and officials continue, according to reports by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), raising ongoing concerns about their safety.

Periodic UNAMA reports indicate that at least 23 former Afghan government military personnel and officials were killed between Jadi 1404 and the end of Sunbula 1405.

The United Nations has reported that killings, arbitrary detentions and disappearances of former personnel continue, indicating that the announced “general amnesty” has not fully guaranteed their security.

In recent months, several killings of former military personnel have been reported in various provinces, including Daikundi, Herat, Takhar and Badghis. In addition, some Afghans returning to the country have also been targeted in attacks attributed to the Taliban.

The Taliban has rejected UNAMA’s reports, claiming that some of the incidents stemmed from personal disputes and enmities. However, the United Nations has documented these cases as violations of the rights of former government personnel and expressed concern over the continuation of the trend.
