Protests in Badakhshan Over Mining and Poppy Eradication Turn Violent

DID Press: Local sources in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province report that tensions between Taliban forces and residents in the districts of Shaki and Argo have escalated into violent clashes, resulting in deaths and injuries.

Residents in Shaki district say protests erupted over the extraction of the Qotqoti gold mine, where individuals linked to a local commander reportedly attempted to take control of large areas of grazing land and green spaces for mining operations.

Locals had demanded that extraction be limited to a smaller area to prevent environmental destruction, but negotiations reportedly failed and the situation escalated into armed confrontation. At least one person was killed and several others wounded, according to local sources. Around 15 protesters were also reportedly detained, while several villages were placed under Taliban control.

Separately, in Argo district, another clash broke out between residents and Taliban forces during an anti-narcotics operation aimed at destroying poppy fields. Local sources say at least two civilians were killed as a result of direct gunfire.

Residents argue that the lack of alternative crops and worsening economic conditions have left farmers with no option but to continue poppy cultivation.

The incidents have renewed concerns over rising public unrest in Badakhshan and the Taliban’s handling of local protests and resource-related disputes.
