Afghanistan Ranks 142nd Out of 143 in 2026 Rule of Law Index
DID Press: Afghanistan has ranked 142nd out of 143 countries in the World Justice Project’s (WJP) 2026 Rule of Law Index, reflecting the poor state of the country’s legal and judicial system under Taliban rule.

According to the ranking, Afghanistan is placed just one position above Venezuela. Denmark, Norway and Finland occupy the top three positions.
The index assesses eight areas, including constraints on government powers, fundamental rights, transparency, enforcement of regulations, and civil and criminal justice. Afghanistan ranks 140th in both fundamental rights and order and security.
After returning to power in 1400 (2021), the Taliban suspended Afghanistan’s Constitution and dismantled much of the country’s previous legal framework. Taliban officials initially spoke of temporarily implementing the 1343 (1964) Constitution, with provisions they opposed removed. However, five years later, they have neither adopted that constitution nor drafted a new one.
Afghanistan is now the only country in the world without an official constitution.
