Taliban Set to Sign Major Energy Investment Agreements with Azizi Energy

DID Press: Taliban administration’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs has announced plans to sign major investment agreements with private company Azizi Energy covering natural gas extraction, coal mining and electricity generation.

The agreements are aimed at developing Afghanistan’s energy infrastructure and reducing the country’s reliance on imported electricity.

The contracts are scheduled to be signed today, Wednesday, November 4 (13 Aqrab), during an official ceremony attended by Taliban officials and representatives of Azizi Energy.

According to information released about the agreements, Azizi Energy will be responsible for implementing a series of infrastructure projects in Afghanistan’s energy and natural resources sectors. However, financial details, the total investment value and the volume of reserves to be exploited have not yet been disclosed.

Despite having significant natural gas and coal reserves, as well as considerable hydropower and solar energy potential, Afghanistan continues to import a large share of its electricity from neighbouring countries.

Over the past five years, the Taliban administration has sought to increase domestic energy production and reduce dependence on electricity imports through the development of thermal, hydropower and solar power plants, alongside expanded extraction of underground resources.

The planned agreements come as attracting domestic and foreign investment in the mining and energy sectors has become a key priority of the Taliban’s economic agenda. However, continuing international sanctions, banking restrictions and investment-related challenges remain major obstacles to the development of large-scale economic projects in Afghanistan.
