Taliban Intelligence Chief: ISIS Uses Telegram and TikTok for Funding and Propaganda

DID Press: Abdul Haq Wasiq, head of the Taliban administration’s intelligence agency, says the Islamic State (ISIS) group uses social media platforms, including Telegram and TikTok, to communicate, secure financial resources and promote its ideological beliefs.

Wasiq made the remarks at the first Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus expert meeting on security issues, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

He said the Taliban government, based on its beliefs and convictions, was at the forefront of the fight against ISIS. However, he added that Afghanistan faces serious limitations in disrupting the group’s technical capabilities.

The Taliban intelligence chief further alleged that technology companies and the operators of Telegram and TikTok were not cooperating with Afghanistan in countering IS activities. He said this lack of cooperation had allowed the group to expand its activities globally.

Wasiq also said ISIS causes significant civilian casualties each year through its activities in various countries.

The first Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus expert meeting on security issues was held on November 5 and 6 in Samarkand. Representatives from 24 countries and five international organisations attended the meeting to discuss counterterrorism, extremism and emerging security threats.
