NSC announced the release of 98 other Taliban prisoners on Sunday in the eighth round of the process of releasing 5000 inmates.
“pursuant to president Ashraf Ghani’s decree, 98 Taliban prisoners were released based on their age, health and length of remaining sentence as part of our efforts toward peace and battling COVID-19,” said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the NSC.
According to him, the process of releasing Taliban prisoners will continue in the future.
The Afghan government has so far released 648 Taliban inmates in 28 provinces.
Taliban also announced that they have released 112 government prisoners in Kandahar, Laghman and Kunduz provinces. However, the government has confirmed the release of 106, saying that most of them are civilians.
Prisoners swap had been mentioned in US-Taliban agreement signed on 29 February in Doha which were supposed to be released before 10 March, but for some reason, this process has not yet been completed.
