Historic Shift in Canadian Foreign Policy: Carney Announces Recognition of Palestine in September

DID Press: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that his country intends to recognize an independent Palestinian state at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

He stressed that the decision was taken in response to Israel’s actions in the Gaza war and to maintain hope for a two-state solution. “Tel Aviv’s behavior has worried its Western allies, so that countries such as France and Britain are also considering changing their policies,” Carney said.

Carney also said Canada’s action was in support of the rights of the Palestinian people and would be a step towards returning the peace process to a diplomatic path. The decision drew a strong Israeli reaction, with Tel Aviv officials describing it as part of “distorted international pressure.”

“It’s not an unthinkable scenario, but something I can’t even predict,” the Canadian PM said when asked about the possibility of a change of position until the UN summit.

With this decision, Canada is the third Western country, along with France and Britain, to publicly declare its readiness to recognize Palestine; The move is considered a turning point in the recent diplomatic developments in the region
