Following Washington, Trump to Deploy National Guard to Chicago

DID Press: U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago, following their recent deployment to Washington, D.C. New York will be the next city targeted in his initiative to curb crime, he added.

Earlier, Trump had sent National Guard forces to Los Angeles and Washington—both under Democratic control—and warned that similar measures could be taken in other Democrat-led cities.

The decision comes despite official data showing that crime rates across the U.S. are at their lowest level in three decades. Nevertheless, about 2,000 National Guard personnel have been stationed in Washington, and the Department of Defense has indicated that they will soon be equipped with military weapons.

Defending his decision, Trump described the capital as a “crime-infested rat’s nest” and declared a “public security emergency,” pledging to remove the homeless from the city—remarks that drew sharp criticism from Washington’s mayor.

Last week, Patrick Morrisey, the Republican governor of West Virginia, deployed 400 National Guard troops to Washington at Trump’s request. Previously, the president had ordered 800 additional troops to be stationed in the capital.

During an August 11 press conference, Trump said that “the time for bold action has arrived” and vowed that his plan to make cities “safer and more beautiful” would be rolled out swiftly.
