Social Welfare System Unsustainable, Warns German Chancellor

DID Press: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted that Germany can no longer afford the heavy costs of its social welfare system and is facing a deep structural economic crisis.

According to Russia Today, Merz told his party members that under current conditions, financing the social welfare system is beyond the government’s capacity, and the country’s economic challenges are far more complex than previously anticipated.

He emphasized that Germany is grappling not only with economic weakness but also with a structural crisis in its economic system—one that will require difficult and time-consuming decisions to resolve.

Germany’s industrial sector, long regarded as the engine of Europe’s economy, is under significant pressure from rising energy costs and restrictions imposed by U.S. tariffs. These factors have severely limited the government’s ability to support the welfare system, leaving the country’s economic future uncertain.
