UN Backs Two-state Solution, Excludes Hamas from Palestinian Politics

DID Press: UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted “New York Declaration,” a landmark resolution mapping out concrete, time-bound and irreversible steps toward a two-state solution to end the decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The resolution, passed with 142 votes in favor, 10 against and 12 abstentions, calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages(captives) and prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and unrestricted humanitarian access to the besieged territory.

Among the opponents were the United States, Israel, Hungary, Argentina, Palau, Nauru, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga. Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and dozens of other states supported the measure.

The declaration envisions the West Bank and Gaza unified under the Palestinian Authority, anchored in the principle of “one state, one government, one law, one weapon.” It further sets the path toward the establishment of an independent, sovereign and democratic Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, coexisting peacefully and securely alongside Israel.

The document explicitly rejects occupation, forced displacement and any unlawful demographic or territorial changes. It also calls for structural reforms within the Palestinian Authority to strengthen governance.

Additionally, the declaration supports stabilizing measures, including the potential deployment of an interim international mission to protect civilians, while setting up monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with its irreversible, time-bound commitments.
