Khalilzad Urges Pakistan to Negotiate With TTP

DID Press: Former U.S. special envoy on Afghanistan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad warned that Pakistan’s military approach to countering Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is failing, urging Islamabad to pursue a political solution through dialogue.

In a post on X, Khalilzad cautioned that Pakistan’s continued reliance on force would not yield results. He said the government and security institutions in Islamabad had so far failed to craft an effective and sustainable strategy to end the crisis.

“It is time for Pakistan to shift toward a political solution and initiate talks with TTP,” he wrote.

Khalilzad recalled that before 2021, Pakistan had consistently advised the United States and former Afghanistan government to negotiate with the Taliban to end the conflict through political means. “Now, Islamabad should adopt the same approach toward the TTP,” he added.

He further suggested that Afghanistan’s Taliban-led caretaker government can play a constructive role in facilitating and supporting a potential dialogue process between Pakistan and TTP.
