Doha Summit Yields Ineffective Statement With No Concrete Action on Palestine

DID Press: Joint emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League in Doha expected to deliver a strong response to Israel’s recent strike on Qatar, however, it has largely fallen flat. A leaked draft communiqué suggests the gathering will offer only verbal condemnation.

According to excerpts published by Al Mayadeen, the draft statement denounces the Israeli attack on Doha as a threat to regional stability and an obstacle to halting the war in Gaza. It also cites what it calls “acts of genocide” in the Strip, ongoing settlement expansion in the West Bank, and the risk of collapsing normalization efforts with Tel Aviv. The draft stresses that lasting peace in the Middle East is only possible once Palestinian rights are fully guaranteed and the Arab Peace Initiative is implemented.

The statement voices support for mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States to end Gaza war, while warning against attempts to impose new “realities on the ground,” including annexation of Palestinian territories.

However, Palestinian resistance groups had urged Arab and Islamic leaders to go beyond rhetoric and adopt concrete measures such as political and economic boycotts of Israel, severing ties, pursuing Tel Aviv in international courts, and pressing for an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack and Washington’s ambassador to Turkey held sideline meetings in Doha with several Arab officials, including the foreign ministers of Jordan and the so-called “Interim Government” led by the al-Jolani faction.
