UN Reviews Draft Resolution on Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan

DID Press: UN Human Rights Council announced that it will review a draft European Union resolution proposing the establishment of an independent body to collect and analyze evidence of human rights violations in Afghanistan.

The draft resolution condemns the Taliban’s policies against women and girls, including restrictions on their participation in the UN and non-governmental organizations.

Human Rights Watch has described the adoption of the resolution as a crucial step toward ending impunity in Afghanistan.

So far, 14 council member states have expressed support for the draft. Meanwhile, ongoing restrictions on women’s education and participation continue to create significant challenges. A recent report from international organizations noted that, due to the Taliban-imposed limitations on women’s employment and activity, many agencies have been forced to hire foreign female staff to operate their programs in Afghanistan.
