DID Press: China’s Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday the inauguration of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong on October 20, 2025. Nearly 200 representatives from over 30 founding countries and various Hong Kong sectors attended the ceremony.

Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying praised the unprecedented speed of IOMed’s establishment, saying the organization is founded on principles of reconciliation, cooperation, justice, and shared interests. She added that IOMed will strengthen international legal frameworks and help build a community with a shared future.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John K.C. Lee highlighted the city’s support for IOMed under the “one country, two systems” framework, emphasizing its potential role in resolving international disputes.
Representatives from countries including Nicaragua, Venezuela, Congo, Kiribati, Pakistan, Kenya, and Dominica underscored the organization’s importance and expressed expectations for its role in peaceful conflict resolution.
The IOMed charter was signed in Hong Kong on May 30, 2025, and came into effect on August 29, 2025. Currently, 37 countries are signatories, eight of which have ratified the agreement. The organization is intended to complement existing judicial and arbitration mechanisms.
