Australia Warns Citizens against All Travel to Afghanistan

DID Press: Australian government issued a new travel warning advising its citizens not to travel to Afghanistan under any circumstances, including on apparently reputable tourism packages. Authorities cited significant security risks in the country under Taliban control.

The warning said: “Do not plan any tourist travel to Afghanistan, even if offered by legitimate operators. In recent months, several Western travelers, including Australians, have been shot, injured, or killed while on tours in Afghanistan.”

The advisory comes amid a surge in tourism in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Official figures indicate that fewer than 700 tourists visited the country in 2021, rising to over 9,000 in 2024.

Despite this growth, Australian officials emphasized that the security situation remains highly dangerous and unpredictable, with risks including terrorism, hostage-taking, and arbitrary detentions. Armed conflicts could escalate suddenly, and airports or borders might close without warning, potentially trapping visitors.

The statement also warned that travelers who ignore these advisories would be responsible for their own safety. Consular assistance would be extremely limited, as Australia currently has no embassy in Kabul and can offer minimal diplomatic or passport services.
