Colombia Suspends Intelligence Cooperation with US Over Caribbean Drug Operations

DID Press: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered the suspension of intelligence cooperation with U.S. agencies following recent American attacks on drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean, describing the operations as inconsistent with human rights principles.

In a post on social media platform X, Petro stated that Colombia will halt information sharing with U.S. intelligence entities until further notice, emphasizing that “the fight against drugs must serve the human rights of Caribbean populations, not become a tool for killings at sea.”

The decision comes in response to recent U.S. military actions targeting several boats in Caribbean waters, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties among their crews.

According to Reuters, the United States has significantly increased its military presence in the Caribbean in recent months, deploying warships, fighter jets, and thousands of personnel as part of a renewed campaign against drug trafficking networks.

Petro’s move could escalate tensions between Bogotá and Washington, marking a new phase in relations that have been historically grounded in anti-narcotics cooperation and joint counter-smuggling programs spanning decades.
