Turkey Arrests Senior ISIS Member in Afghanistan–Pakistan Region

DID Press: Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) announced it has arrested Mehmet Goren, also known by the alias “Yahya,” a senior member of the ISIS terrorist group, in the Afghanistan–Pakistan region. The suspect has since been transferred to Turkey.

According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu News Agency, citing security sources, Goren played an active role in ISIS training camps and gradually rose to a so-called “managerial” position within the group, where he was tasked with planning and carrying out suicide attacks.

Security sources said Goren had agreed to conduct suicide attacks against civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Europe. MIT intelligence assessments revealed that he had traveled from Turkey to the Afghanistan–Pakistan region to carry out his activities.

Investigations also showed that the ISIS operative survived aerial strikes targeting ISIS positions in Pakistan.

The report further noted that Goren worked closely with Özgu‌r Altun, also known as “Abu Yasser al-Turki,” who had previously played a key role in transferring ISIS members from Turkey to the Afghanistan–Pakistan region. Altun was arrested earlier and transferred to Turkey.
