China to Deepen Economic Partnership with Canada Amid Trump Tariff Threats

DID Press: China announced plans to strengthen its economic ties with Canada under a “strategic partnership,” amid threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa confirmed the initiative in comments to The Globe and Mail.

The embassy emphasized that “healthy and stable growth in China-Canada relations serves the mutual interests of both countries and contributes to global peace, stability, development, and prosperity.”

This announcement follows Trump’s warning that a trade deal between Canada and China could turn Canada into a “gateway for Chinese goods” entering the United States. Trump has also publicly criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media.

Responding without directly referencing the U.S. or Trump, Carney said in a video message on social media: “When our economy is threatened from abroad, Canadians have chosen to focus on what we can control. We will buy Canadian and make Canadian products.”

In January, Canada and China officially launched a strategic economic partnership. During his visit to China, Carney noted that Beijing is a “more predictable” trading partner than Washington. As part of the agreement, Canada will export roughly 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles at reduced tariffs, while China lowered tariffs on Canadian canola in return.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed that both countries have resolved bilateral trade disputes and expressed intentions to expand economic cooperation further in the future.
