UN: Taliban–Pakistan Border Tensions Disrupt Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan

DID Press: UN says escalating border tensions between the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan and Pakistan have created serious obstacles for the delivery of humanitarian aid into Afghanistan.

According to Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, at least 167 humanitarian aid shipments are currently stranded on the Pakistani side of border crossings.

Fletcher said the suspension of some flights and heightened security restrictions have further limited access for aid agencies trying to reach vulnerable communities.

The UN official added that recent clashes in border areas have displaced more than 16,000 families, while a hospital in the border town of Torkham has been damaged.

Both sides have also made claims of heavy casualties, though these reports have not yet been independently verified.

The United Nations warned that continued instability could further worsen conditions for millions of Afghans who rely on urgent humanitarian assistance.
