American Citizen Freed Without Deal With Taliban, Says Trump Envoy

DID Press: Adam Boehler, special envoy for hostage affairs under Donald Trump, said the release of detained American citizen Dennis Coyle was secured without any financial payment, prisoner exchange, or political concession to the Taliban.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Boehler stressed that “no deal was made, no money was paid,” adding that the U.S. government is committed to ending what he described as hostage diplomacy.

Coyle, a 64-year-old linguistics researcher who had worked in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, was detained by Taliban intelligence forces in Kabul in January 2025 and held for more than a year, reportedly under near-solitary confinement. U.S. officials had previously labeled his detention unlawful and had pursued sustained diplomatic efforts to secure his release.

Taliban authorities stated that Coyle’s release followed a request from his family and a ruling by the group’s supreme court, which determined that his period of detention had been sufficient. The Taliban’s foreign ministry also acknowledged the role of the United Arab Emirates in facilitating the process.

U.S. officials, however, maintain that the outcome resulted from coordinated diplomatic pressure rather than concessions. Boehler described the case as a significant step in discouraging the use of detentions as leverage and said efforts are continuing to secure the release of other detained Americans, including Mahmood Habibi and Paul Overby.

After his release, Coyle was transferred to the United Arab Emirates before returning to the United States, where he reunited with his family in San Antonio after more than 420 days in detention. U.S. officials described the case as part of a broader policy initiative that has led to the release of more than 100 American citizens from detention abroad over the past 15 months.
