DID Press: A heated exchange took place during the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Group of Seven (G7), where Kaja Kallas and Marco Rubio clashed over how to handle Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine—an incident widely seen as a sign of growing mistrust between Washington and its European allies.

According to Axios, sources present at the meeting said Kallas criticized Washington for failing to exert sufficient pressure on Moscow. Referring to Rubio’s remarks from the previous year, she reportedly asked when U.S. patience toward Russia would run out. Rubio responded sharply, asserting that the United States is making the greatest effort to end the war and suggesting that Europe should act independently if it has a better solution.
Rubio further emphasized that while the United States continues to provide military and intelligence support to Ukraine, it is also pursuing dialogue with both sides of the conflict. Following the tense exchange, several European ministers stressed the importance of maintaining the United States’ diplomatic role in peace negotiations.
A U.S. State Department official later described the incident as a “frank exchange of views,” while Rubio publicly denied any serious tension, noting that such meetings typically include recognition of America’s role. The dispute comes amid rising European concerns about the trajectory of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, as well as unease over Washington’s increasing focus on developments involving Iran.
