Family Members Killed After 5.8-Magnitude Quake in Afghanistan

DID Press: Following a relatively strong earthquake on Tuesday evening, six members of a single family were killed in the Gosfand Dara area of Bagrami district, Kabul. According to Hafiz Basharat, spokesperson for the Kabul governor, the victims included the father, mother, four daughters, and two sons, while a young child was also injured.

Based on data from the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 5.8 magnitude and occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. last night. Its epicenter was recorded 35 kilometers south of Jurm district in Badakhshan Province, at a depth of 186 kilometers. Tremors were felt in Kabul and several other provinces, though no additional official reports of casualties or damage have been released so far.

Following the incident, the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Health instructed all health officials in the capital and provinces to remain on full alert. A spokesperson for the ministry urged citizens to call the free emergency number 102 if assistance is needed, emphasizing that medical teams and ambulances are prepared to provide immediate services.

At the same time, the Afghan Red Crescent Society announced that due to ongoing rainfall and the risk of flooding in multiple provinces—including Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Herat, Badghis, Farah, Nimroz, Ghor, Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Paktia, Khost, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, and Paktika—rescue and relief teams have been placed on standby.
