Mearsheimer: Iran Holds Nearly All Key Strategic Cards in Middle East

DID Press: John Mearsheimer, a well-known scholar of international relations and professor at the University of Chicago, said in remarks on the balance of power in the Middle East that Iran currently holds “almost all major strategic cards” in the region.

He stated that Iran possesses significant capabilities to exert influence across the region and can impact the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Mearsheimer added that this reality has increased the sensitivity of those states toward Iran in regional security calculations.

He also noted that, given Iran’s military capacity and deterrence posture, Tehran is capable of inflicting substantial damage on Israel in the event of a conflict, a factor that further complicates the region’s security environment.

The University of Chicago professor further argued that one of the main challenges of U.S. foreign policy toward Iran is the limitation in escalating tensions, as Iran—according to his assessment—has considerable ability to respond across multiple levels of conflict.
