Uzbekistan, UAE in Talks to Join Trans-Afghan Railway Project

DID Press: Uzbekistan and United Arab Emirates have launched consultations on potential participation in the strategic Trans-Afghan Railway project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at boosting regional connectivity and trade.

Jamshid Khodjaev said discussions took place during his meeting with Shadi Malak in Abu Dhabi, focusing on the possible role of Etihad Rail in one of the region’s most significant transport projects.

The Trans-Afghan Railway, considered a key regional integration corridor, is expected to stretch approximately 647 kilometers, starting from Termez and passing through Maidan Shahr and Logar Province, before reaching Kharlachi on the frontier with Pakistan.

Once completed, the railway will connect Central Asian economies directly to major seaports, including Karachi Port, significantly improving trade flows and logistics efficiency across Central and South Asia.

Preliminary estimates place the total project cost at around $4.6 billion. Analysts say the corridor could play a transformative role in regional commerce, transit, and economic cooperation if successfully implemented.

Founded in 2009, Etihad Rail is responsible for designing, building, and operating the UAE’s national railway network and has already developed more than 1,200 kilometers of track linking key industrial, logistics, and population centers across the country.
