US Angered by Iran’s Election to NPT Conference Bureau
DID Press: A diplomatic dispute has intensified at UN following the selection of Iran to the bureau of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference.

During the session, regional groups nominated 34 candidates for vice-presidential positions, including Iran. Conference President Duong Hai Hung announced that Iran had been nominated by the Non-Aligned Movement and supported by several member states.
In response, Christopher Yau criticized the decision, calling Iran’s election “an insult to the treaty” and alleging that Tehran has failed to meet its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and has not fully cooperated with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
He further described Iran’s presence in the position as “beyond shameful.”
In response, Reza Najafi rejected the accusations, stating they were politically motivated. He argued that the United States, as the only country to have used nuclear weapons and one that continues to expand its arsenal, is not in a position to judge other nations’ compliance.
The NPT Review Conference is considered one of the most significant global forums on nuclear arms control, aimed at assessing member states’ adherence to non-proliferation commitments.
