NATO Says EU Received Trump Message After US Troop Withdrawal

DID Press: NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says European leaders have clearly received Washington’s message following President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany, prompting Europe to strengthen its defense role.

Speaking ahead of the European Political Community summit in Armenia, Rutte said the United States has expressed “disappointment” over NATO allies’ performance. He added that European leaders have “heard the message loud and clear” and are now moving toward taking greater responsibility within the alliance.

The statement comes after the US Defense Department confirmed the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, part of Trump’s broader push for increased European defense spending.

Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for failing to meet financial defense commitments.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently said that Iran had “humiliated” the United States during ceasefire negotiations, a comment that drew additional attention amid the troop withdrawal announcement.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the timing of the decision “surprising,” stressing that Europe must strengthen its role within NATO. She also said US military presence in Europe serves both European and American interests.

A NATO spokesperson said the alliance is reviewing details of Washington’s decision regarding its force posture in Germany.

The developments come amid rising European criticism over the ongoing Iran-related conflict, with disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continuing to impact the global economy.
