Taliban Push Groundwater Management to Address Water Crisis
DID Press: Officials from the Taliban administration, led by Abdul Salam Hanafi, have emphasized strengthening groundwater resources and improving water management systems during a high-level government meeting.

According to Hamdullah Fitrat, the session focused on addressing Afghanistan’s water challenges, including preventing resource wastage and expanding modern irrigation methods.
Senior officials from key ministries—including finance, rural development, agriculture, and energy—reviewed the current state of water resources and irrigation infrastructure across the country.
Participants stressed the importance of constructing small dams, check dams, water reservoirs, and agricultural canals to improve water storage and distribution. Efficient and targeted use of water resources was also highlighted as essential for protecting and replenishing groundwater reserves.
The meeting concluded with decisions to expand irrigation canal networks, promote drip irrigation systems, and ensure sustainable utilization of water resources, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and long-term water security.
