EU Reaffirms Support for Female Health Workers in Afghanistan

DID Press: European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting training and empowerment programs for nurses, particularly women in Afghanistan, marking International Nurses Day on May 12.

In its message, the EU emphasized the essential role of nurses in saving lives and sustaining public health systems, describing them as a vital pillar of healthcare delivery. Female health workers in Afghanistan were highlighted as a critical part of the country’s medical workforce.

The EU also referred to nurses as “unsung heroes” and stressed continued support for educational initiatives and professional capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening the healthcare sector.

Strained health system under pressure

At the same time, international reports indicate that Afghanistan’s healthcare system is facing severe challenges, including shortages of medical supplies, high workloads, declining salaries, and restrictions affecting women working in the health sector. These factors have raised growing concerns among humanitarian organizations about the long-term sustainability of medical services in the country.
