Kyrgyzstan Pledges Focus on Afghanistan in UNSC Bid

DID Press: Sadyr Japarov has said that Afghanistan will remain a key foreign policy priority for Kyrgyzstan if the country secures a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Japarov stated that lasting security in Central Asia cannot be achieved without stability in Afghanistan, emphasizing that Bishkek views the situation there as directly linked to regional peace and security.

In a public message tied to Kyrgyzstan’s diplomatic campaign for the Security Council seat, the president said his country continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, particularly women and children, while supporting Afghanistan’s gradual economic and political integration into the international community.

He added that Kyrgyzstan is prepared to play a more active regional role in promoting stability and cooperation across Central Asia.

The remarks form part of Bishkek’s broader effort to secure international backing ahead of elections for five non-permanent seats on the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, scheduled to take place on June 3, 2026, at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Japarov concluded by urging member states to support Kyrgyzstan’s candidacy, reiterating that stability in Afghanistan remains vital to the security architecture of Central Asia.
