Batur Dostum Warns Taliban as Northern Identity Tensions Intensify

DID Press: Batur Dostum, head of the National Islamic Movement Party, has issued a sharp warning to the Taliban over their policies in northern Afghanistan, amid a renewed surge in ethnic and identity-based political discourse across the country.

In a newly released video, Dostum criticized Taliban governance in the north, stating that “all Taliban movements are under close watch” and insisting that no power can alter the historical identity of Turkic communities in Afghanistan. He stressed that these regions have been home to Turkic populations for thousands of years.

Addressing the Taliban directly, he warned that continued actions in the north would lead to the loss of their “last remaining opportunities.”

The remarks come as tensions persist between the Taliban and various political and ethnic groups in northern Afghanistan, with identity-based narratives gaining momentum in public discourse.

In recent days, renewed discussions around concepts such as “Turkestan,” “Hazaristan,” and “Khorasan” have circulated widely on social media and within political circles.

Former Faryab governor Naqibullah Faiq previously sparked controversy by suggesting the creation of an independent “Southern Turkestan” for Uzbek communities, though he later deleted the post.

Bashir Ahmad Tahyanj also stated that the estimated 10 million Uzbeks in Afghanistan have the right to reclaim their ancestral land and establish an independent state.

Although some of these statements were later withdrawn or clarified, they triggered widespread debate among political and cultural figures, reopening discussions on ethnic identity and historical boundaries in Afghanistan.

Analysts argue that structural inequality, lack of an inclusive national identity, and concentrated political power have contributed to the resurgence of identity-driven and separatist narratives, particularly in northern regions of the country.
