UNSC to Vote on Future of UNAMA in Afghanistan

DID Press: United Nations Security Council is set to hold two important meetings on Afghanistan this month, including a vote on the future of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), as the country continues to face deep political, humanitarian, and human rights challenges.

According to UNAMA, the first meeting will take place on 9 June and will focus on a periodic briefing covering the latest developments in Afghanistan, including political, security, and humanitarian conditions.

A second session is scheduled for 16 June, during which Council members are expected to vote on whether to extend UNAMA’s mandate.

The upcoming vote has drawn increased attention after the Security Council earlier this year renewed UNAMA’s mandate for only three months instead of the usual one-year extension, signaling growing divisions among member states over Afghanistan policy.

Diplomats say the discussions are expected to address the mission’s future role in responding to Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, human rights situation, economic challenges, and international engagement with the Taliban authorities.

A recent report cited in the coverage highlights intensifying geopolitical competition over Afghanistan within the Security Council, where China has emerged as the lead “penholder” on the file, meaning it steers negotiations and drafts resolutions.

This development follows a period of competing diplomatic initiatives among major powers, including China, Pakistan, South Korea, and the United States, reflecting broader disagreements over how to manage the Afghanistan dossier.

China has expanded political and economic engagement with Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, while the United States continues to play a significant role in sanctions policy and Security Council deliberations.
