EU Pushes Diplomacy Amid Rising Pakistan–Taliban Border Clashes

DID Press: European Union has called for restraint and dialogue, stating that airstrikes cannot resolve escalating border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Kaja Kallas made the remarks during a joint press conference in Islamabad with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, emphasizing that negotiations remain the only viable path forward.

Kallas warned that rising cross-border violence has serious humanitarian consequences and increases the risk of broader instability and extremism in the region. She urged both sides to return to diplomatic engagement.

Pakistan, meanwhile, reiterated its security concerns regarding militant activity originating from Afghanistan. Ishaq Dar pointed to groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan as key threats to national security.

While acknowledging Pakistan’s right to self-defense under international law, Kallas stressed that air operations cannot provide a sustainable solution to the crisis.

In recent months, border areas between the two countries have witnessed renewed clashes and airstrikes, including reported Pakistani strikes in Afghanistan’s Khost and Paktika provinces, which have further strained relations with the Taliban authorities.
