Curfew and Internet Blackout Enforced Amid Escalating Unrest in Kashmir

DID Press: Authorities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have imposed a curfew in Muzaffarabad and suspended internet services amid escalating political and street tensions, according to local reports.

The unrest reportedly stems from the “Joint Public Action Committee,” which has demanded the removal of 12 seats reserved for migrants residing in Pakistan from the local Kashmiri assembly and had called for a protest march scheduled for June 9. In response, authorities banned the committee, triggering arrests of its leaders and members.

Meanwhile, the Kashmiri High Court stated that any removal of these seats would require constitutional amendments by a newly elected assembly, adding that structural changes cannot be achieved through street protests or road blockades.

The situation escalated further after a committee member was killed in a clash with security forces in Rawalakot. Following the incident, paramilitary Rangers were deployed to sensitive areas, markets operated partially, and a widespread strike was observed.

Latest reports indicate that at least 72 people have been arrested, while authorities are considering placing 250 activists on a counterterrorism watchlist. Despite the crackdown, protest organizers say the planned June 9 march will proceed, insisting on the release of detained activists.
