Human Rights Body Says Targeting Civilians May Constitute War Crimes

DID Press: International Human Rights Foundation has said that attacks on residential areas and civilians, if confirmed, constitute war crimes under international law, calling for independent investigations and full documentation of recent incidents.

In a statement, the foundation expressed concern over reported Pakistani strikes that allegedly hit residential neighborhoods and civilian populations, urging international bodies to thoroughly document the events.

The organization said that reports of damaged homes and civilian casualties raise serious concerns regarding compliance with international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights principles.

It stressed that all parties involved in armed conflicts are legally obligated to protect civilians and abide by international legal frameworks governing warfare.

Referring to relevant international conventions on the protection of civilians during armed conflict, the foundation stated that deliberate or indiscriminate attacks on populated areas could amount to war crimes if proven and must be subject to impartial investigation.

The group also called on the United Nations Human Rights Council, the International Criminal Court, and other relevant institutions to launch independent inquiries and ensure proper evidence collection.

It further emphasized that preserving documentation and evidence is essential to ensure accountability and potential legal proceedings against those responsible.
