Dozens of Shia Mourners Detained in Kabul as Taliban Remove Muharram Flags
DID Press: Local sources say Taliban authorities have detained at least 46 Shia mourners at a religious congregation venue in Kabul, with 22 individuals reportedly remaining in custody, amid a broader campaign to remove Muharram mourning flags across the Afghan capital.

According to sources in Kabul, Taliban forces raided a Shia gathering place in western Kabul on Tuesday and detained dozens of participants. The sources said 22 of those arrested continue to be held by authorities.
The sources further claimed that representatives from Shia community bodies sought clarification regarding the detainees’ status but were unable to secure discussions with officials.
Reports indicate that Taliban authorities linked the possible release of detainees to the removal of Muharram mourning flags from public areas, while insisting that only the flag of the Islamic Emirate should be displayed.
At the same time, residents reported that Taliban forces have been removing Ashura-related banners and flags from several parts of Kabul, including predominantly Shia neighborhoods. Additional arrests were also reported near a mosque in the Omid-e-Sabz township area.
The developments come despite previous calls by the Shia Ulema Council of Afghanistan for authorities to ensure the safe observance of Muharram and Ashura ceremonies throughout the country.
In recent years, rights advocates and community representatives have expressed concerns over restrictions affecting Shia religious practices, including limits on public displays, processions, and religious gatherings.
