Delawar: Taliban Rejected US Request to Keep Base in Afghanistan

DID Press: Shahabuddin Delawar has claimed that the United States sought to retain a military base in Afghanistan during the Doha Agreement negotiations, but the proposal was rejected by the Taliban.

Speaking in Kabul, Delawar said US officials requested permission to maintain a military presence in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of American forces. According to him, Taliban negotiators did not accept the proposal.

He further claimed that following the signing of the Doha Agreement, no deadly attacks were carried out by the Taliban against US forces and that the group maintained control over the security situation during the withdrawal process.

The remarks add to ongoing debate surrounding the negotiations that paved the way for the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the subsequent return of the Taliban to power in August 2021.

US officials have previously offered differing assessments of the Doha Agreement and the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal, which remains a subject of political and strategic discussion both inside Afghanistan and internationally.
