Neumann: EU–Taliban Talks May Lead to Political Engagement

DID Press: European Parliament member Hannah Neumann has criticized recent EU–Taliban discussions in Brussels, arguing that the meeting carries clear political implications and cannot be described as merely technical.

Neumann said that any official invitation, visa issuance, or formal meeting with the Taliban has political consequences and risks conferring legitimacy on the group.

She stressed that labeling the talks as “technical” does not change their political nature, adding that the Taliban are likely to use such engagements to expand international contacts and gain political recognition.

Her remarks came after a recent meeting in Brussels between European Union officials and a Taliban delegation, which has sparked debate among EU lawmakers and human rights advocates.

Neumann further warned that such interactions could gradually pave the way for broader political engagement between the two sides.

International relations analysts also suggest that these contacts may evolve into more structured diplomatic exchanges over time.
