Oman: Gulf Security Doctrine Has Failed

DID Press: Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said the recent conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel exposed fundamental flaws in the Gulf’s long-standing security architecture, calling for a new regional security doctrine based on inclusion and cooperation rather than containment.

Writing in the French newspaper Le Monde, Albusaidi argued that the recent war laid bare the weaknesses of the existing Gulf security framework and underscored the urgent need for a more sustainable and realistic regional security order.

He said the conflict was “a tragedy” that lacked authorization from the UN Security Council and failed to achieve any of its declared objectives.

Albusaidi added that if the conflict marks the end of what he described as the “myth of the containment policy” in the Gulf, it could pave the way for a more balanced, pragmatic and effective regional security system capable of correcting what he called nearly five decades of strategic mistakes.

His remarks come as tensions between Iran and the United States remain elevated, while attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified concerns over regional security and the risk of further escalation.
